Thank You for Becoming a Member

National Business Education Association is pleased to provide you with $60,000 of group term life insurance for one year ... in recognition of your new membership with the association.

There is no cost to you for this coverage. Premiums are paid by the Trust for Insuring Educators (TIE) on behalf of your association.

At the end of one year, you’ll have the option to renew this valuable insurance protection at the prevailing group rates —and we certainly hope you do! However, the decision is entirely up to you.

Eligibility Guidelines

You are eligible for this new-member benefit if you:

  • Are a U.S. resident (except NV, OR, SD, VT, or any Territory such as Guam or Puerto Rico)
  • Are a new member of National Business Education Association or another professional association affiliated with the Trust for Insuring Educators
  • Are age 18 to 59 on the policy issue date, which is the first day of the month following receipt and approval of your enrollment by New York Life Insurance Company
  • Are not a current or past policyholder of a TIE Group Term Life Insurance policy
  • Have not applied in the past and been turned down for a TIE Group Term Life Insurance policy

Additional Coverage

Does your family need more than $60,000 of life insurance? There are several options to add coverage above the $60,000 you may receive through the New-Member No-Cost Insurance program:

  • You can apply for up to $120,000 of additional term life insurance at the same time as you enroll online in the New-Member No-Cost Insurance program. This increase in coverage involves a simplified insurance application with three health questions. The policy's member-only rates apply.
  • When you apply for paid insurance (in addition to your $60,000 no-cost coverage) your spouse also may apply for coverage. A spouse’s coverage cannot exceed the member’s paid coverage by more than one unit ($20,000). Premiums for the spouse are based on the member’s age when coverage becomes effective. Dependent children can be insured for up to $12,000 each when the member purchases additional insurance. You can download a Spouse & Dependent Insurance Application, or call our Customer Service Center at 1-800-821-7303 and ask for assistance with “TIE Group Term Life Policy.”
  • Higher amounts of group term life insurance — up to $1 million in coverage for the member and spouse — are available by submitting a fully underwritten application that involves the disclosure of more detailed health information. This application is available for online submission or by calling Customer Service at (800) 821-7303. Ask for assistance with the “TIE Group Term Life Policy.”

Frequently Asked Questions

This is term life insurance, which is the most basic and cost-effective form of life insurance.

No. This coverage provides life insurance protection for a specified period of time based on the amount of premium paid in advance. The premium for your first year is paid by the Trust for Insuring Educators (TIE), on behalf of your professional association.

The term indicates you are guaranteed to be issued coverage, regardless of your health status, provided you meet all eligibility requirements.

There is no cost to you for the first year. Thereafter, if you choose to retain the coverage, you are subject to the regular rates for this group policy, which are established in five-year age bands (see Coverage Highlights). When an insured enters a new age band, his or her rate increases. There are separate rates for smokers (tobacco users) and non-smokers but no rate distinction based on gender. Coverage can be requested in $20,000 increments, called units. The coverage is guaranteed renewable to age 80, provided premiums are paid when due.

You can apply for up to $120,000 of additional term life insurance at the same time as you enroll online in the New-Member No-Cost Insurance program. This increase in coverage involves a simplified insurance application with three health questions. The policy's member-only rates apply.

Higher amounts of group term life insurance — up to $1 million in coverage — are available by submitting a fully underwritten application that involves the disclosure of more detailed health information. This application is available for online submission or by calling Customer Service at (800) 821-7303. Ask for assistance with the “TIE Group Term Life Policy.”

You will receive a premium notice to continue your coverage. If you choose not to pay this bill, your coverage will terminate.

If you purchased an increase in addition to the $60,000 no-cost coverage, your account will be handled differently. When the no-cost coverage expires, you will receive a single premium notice to continue the policy, including your increase.

Yes, when you apply for paid insurance (in addition to your $60,000 no-cost coverage).

New members of associations affiliated with the Trust for Insuring Educators (TIE) are eligible for coverage if they are: U.S. residents (except NV, OR, SD, VT); are age 18 to 59 on the policy issue date, which is the first day of the month following receipt and approval of their application by New York Life Insurance Company; are not a current or past policyholder of a TIE group term life insurance policy; and have not applied in the past and been turned down for a TIE group term life policy.

A member’s spouse(1) is eligible to apply for insurance coverage when the member applies for paid insurance (in addition to the $60,000 no-cost coverage). A spouse’s coverage cannot exceed the member’s paid coverage by more than one unit ($20,000). Premiums for the spouse are based on the member’s age when coverage becomes effective. A member’s unmarried, dependent children ages 14 days to 21 years (23 years if a full-time student) can be insured for up to $12,000 each when the member purchases additional insurance. Accelerated Death Benefit

If you or your spouse has been diagnosed with a terminal condition that results in an expected life span of 12 months(2) or less, the Accelerated Death Benefit will pay up to 50% of the insured’s term life amount. Diagnosis and evaluation of limited life expectancy must be provided to New York Life Insurance Company. The benefit will be paid to the insured member upon acceptance of the claim. Upon the death of the insured, the amount of insurance then payable will be reduced by the amount paid under the Accelerated Death Benefit.
(2) In Illinois, 24 months

Please note that receipt of accelerated death benefits may affect your eligibility for public assistance programs and may be taxable. Prior to applying for such benefits you should consult with the appropriate social service agency and seek the advice of tax counsel.

Waiver of Premium Benefit

If you become totally disabled while insured and before age 60, and the disability lasts for at least nine months, your coverage will continue with no premium due. The policy premiums will be waived as long as you are disabled. Your amount of coverage will be subject to the age-related decreases shown on the rate table. Evidence of continued disability is required periodically.

Effective Date

Coverage becomes effective on the first day of the month following receipt and approval of your application by New York Life Insurance Company.

When Coverage Ends

This no-cost coverage ends 12 months from the effective date unless you authorize renewal and pay the premium as billed. You will receive renewal information at least 30 days before the no-cost coverage period ends. If you choose to renew, your coverage will continue as long as you pay premiums when due and the group policy is not terminated by New York Life or the Trust for Insuring Educators.

Limitations

In the event of your death by suicide during the first 24 months of coverage (Missouri and North Dakota residents, 12 months), benefits are limited to a refund of premiums paid.
